Integrating gender studies and diversity studies into curricula
The fundamental differentiations and categorisations of identity, especially with regard to gender, ethnicity/nationality and disability, in our culture result in clearly different preconditions of knowledge. Within the framework of the study programme, topics from the field of gender studies and diversity studies are therefore included in order to promote awareness-raising, strengthen self-reflexiveness and identify mechanisms for the construction of inequality in and through science and professional cultures:
- Interdisciplinary approach: Comprehensive gender and diversity module for a number of degree programmes
Certificate "Gender Studies" at the University of Cologne
- Integrative approach: theories, methods and findings of gender studies and diversity studies as an integral part of teaching;
Lectureship pool Gender Studies at the University of Cologne
- Particular-explicit approach: gender and/or diversity modules, gender and/or diversity module components;
- Explicit approach: own BA / MA gender or diversity degree course
Inter-faculty interdisciplinary Master of Arts "Gender & Queer Studies" at the University of Cologne (Start: winter semester 2017/18)
The following interdisciplinary questions are to be focused on:
- Addressing the professional history and development of the disciplines from a gender and diversity perspective and the analysis of occupational social inequalities;
- Sensitising students to the implications of the categories of gender and diversity for science, research and practice in their discipline;
- Reflection on the forms and contexts of knowledge (re)production and the resulting inequalities.
